Full course description

This introductory mini-course presents data on “achievement” in English language arts (ELA) in the United States, provides an overview of the Common Core State Standards in English, and engages participants in unpacking the relationship between “achievement” in ELA and advancing justice through teaching. It also introduces participants to a series of teacher candidate-facing lesson plans that can be used to support novice teachers in considering ELA curriculum materials from the perspective of advancing justice.


This mini-course is recommended for anyone planning to participate in any of the subsequent mini-courses, but it is not required.

  • Session 1 (asynchronous): Available Friday, November 6, 12:00 a.m. EST 
  • Session 2 (synchronous): Friday, November 13, 3:00-4:30 p.m. EST
  • Session 3 (synchronous): Friday, November 20, 3:00-4:30 p.m. EST


Registration deadline: Friday, October 30, 2020, 5:00 p.m. EST

You may register for one or more mini-courses in the virtual mini-course series and must commit to attending all sessions in each mini-course for which you register. All instruction will be provided by TeachingWorks English language arts specialists. This mini-course may require that you borrow or purchase texts that are required reading.
