Full course description

Join Nicole Cirino and Alexis Yowell to learn about essential teaching practices for the upcoming year. The start of the school year, particularly this school year which follows an extended shift to online instruction or distance teaching, sets the stage for learning for the year. Teachers work to build strong relationships with students and to determine what their new group of students knows and can do. This session will provide an opportunity for teachers to:

  1. consider how to build relationships with and support the social and emotional needs of students returning to the classroom or joining a new virtual classroom,

  2. orient teaching and learning to focus on where students are emotionally, socially, and academically,

  3. develop ways to learn what students know and can do without over-assessing, and

  4. work with their own curriculum materials to adapt them to support students in engaging in investigation and discussion, in person or, if needed, online.

This synchronous professional learning workshop is part of the Virtual K-12 Laboratory Classes and Professional Learning Workshops. The K-12 laboratory classes are structured to make it possible for educators, policymakers, and education advocates to engage directly in the close study of teaching practice in elementary mathematics. The program will provide participants with opportunities to delve into the complexity of teaching, explore and challenge what it means to use skillful teaching practice to disrupt injustice, as well as develop specific professional skills.
