Full course description

Join Deborah Loewenberg Ball, the director of TeachingWorks and an experienced elementary teacher, for a ninety-minute recording of a webinar exploring how to launch math in your class this fall to set students up for successful engagement in mathematical thinking across the school year. We’ll share ways to:
  • Signal to students what doing and knowing math is going to be like this year;
  • Create an inclusive and equitable space for students to show up and do smart things in math;
  • Build relationships with students and learn what they know and can do; and
  • Establish positive learning routines for collective mathematical work.
In the webinar recording, you'll explore the question:
How can we use the first few weeks of school to establish an affirming classroom environment for students to engage collectively in challenging mathematics and develop positive identities as mathematical thinkers and doers?

What to expect in the Beginning the School Year in Math webinar:

  • An in-depth look at how the mathematical tasks you work on at the beginning of the year can impact how students see themselves as mathematical doers and knowers and help you learn about them
  • Opportunities to explore specific tasks together
  • Strategies for creating a classroom in which students can thrive mathematically

Leave the webinar with:

  • Specific math tasks for starting the school year
  • Resources to create an affirming mathematics environment in your classroom
  • A certificate of completion
